Assistant Superintendent Shirley Martin will take over in her stead, assuming her duties presiding over the 3,400-student district.

No reason for the sudden paid leave has been announced, and the district declined to comment further. Hazelton was reportedly alerted to her home leave on Friday, June 14, in a confidential letter.

Hazelton started in the district as a substitute teacher in 1996 and worked her way up the administrative ladder, taking over as superintendent in October 2015.

In addition to Hazelton’s paid leave, longtime school board trustee Willa Scott has been removed from her position, and the district is attempting to locate a replacement. She reportedly missed several recent board meetings due to illness before her dismissal.
