In May, 18-year-old Anastasia Stapon claimed that Regan was a “sexual deviant” who “deluded her into complete dependence upon him alone,” an attorney for the teen claimed. She has since filed a $10 million federal lawsuit against the Riverhead Central School District and Regan.

Regan, who’s been administratively assigned to his home since April, will resign effective as of Friday, Sept. 27. The alleged abuse began on Jan. 8 and continued until April 30, the attorney alleges.

Stapon, a senior and athlete at the school, and an adopted child from Russia claimed that the high school principal isolated her from her family, friends and the school counselor in order to groom her for his sexual use.

It is alleged that over the course of the four months, Regan sent thousands of sexually explicit text messages to Stapon, and allegedly kissed and groped her in his office.

The incidents came to light when Stapon told her adoptive parents after Regan allegedly pulled Stapon by the neck and "shoved his tongue into her mouth."

An attorney for Stapon also alleged that Regan made death threats to two other students because he was jealous of their relationship with the teen.

"By accepting the resignation, the district receives a certain result; namely, that Mr. Regan is no longer an employee of the district," School Board President Greg Meyer stated. "While the evidence against Mr. Regan is overwhelming and disturbing, anything can happen when a decision is left in the hands of a single hearing officer."

Regan joined the district in 2006 as an assistant principal and took over as principal in 2013.
