A chain-reaction wrong-way crash that injured a West Islip man in North Babylon was likely caused by a medical incident, Suffolk County Police said.
The crash occurred Sunday afternoon, June 16 when police say Robert Wolf of West Islip was driving a 2007 Chevy Malibu on Sunrise Highway South Service Road when the vehicle entered Sunrise Highway, just west of Route 231, traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes, Suffolk County Police said.
The Malibu struck a 2002 Dodge pickup truck being driven by John Gallagher of Conway, South Carolina, according to police. A truck wheel fell off during the crash and struck a 2018 Volvo. A motorcyclist swerved to avoid the Volvo and struck the median, said police.
Wolf, 74, is believed to have suffered a medical incident prior to the crash and was transported by ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. A passenger in his vehicle was not injured. No other injuries were reported.
