A man was crossing Herkimer Street at the intersection of Carlton Street in Mastic when he was struck by a southbound 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe at approximately 8:50 p.m. Saturday, May 4, Suffolk County Police said.

The driver of the Tahoe, Joseph Virga, 55, of Mastic, stopped the vehicle and called 911, according to police. A second vehicle, also traveling southbound on Herkimer Street, then struck the victim and fled the scene, police said.

The victim, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Detectives believe the second vehicle that struck the victim is a dark-colored, four-door sedan that fled the scene southbound on Mastic Road.
