Suffolk County Police and the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) arrested Clifford Nagel, 72, of Mount Sinai on Thursday, Nov. 14.

Police say they received a report from a resident of Puritan Drive that two of his cats were limping and that a veterinarian determined that they had been shot on Thursday, Nov. 14 around 9 a.m.

The report also stated that one of the man’s cats was walking with a limp in early September and had to be euthanized after a veterinarian determined that it, too, had been shot, police say.

Further investigation revealed that Nagel, the victim’s neighbor, shot all three cats with a pellet gun, according to police. Two of the cats are being treated for injuries.

Nagel was charged with three counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, a Class E Felony under the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law. He was ticketed and is scheduled to be arraigned.
