A man from Smithtown has been charged after police say he burglarized a home and was confronted by the owner.
Suffolk County Police arrested Daniel Culotta, 54, of Smithtown after he allegedly stole a package and burglarized a Nesconset home on Wednesday, Oct. 23 around 3 p.m.
Police say Culotta stole the package from the front porch of a residence on Townline Road. He then allegedly walked to the rear of the home and kicked in the back door to enter the garage, stealing a power washing from inside.
Culotta was subsequently confronted by the homeowner, who police say was holding his one-year-old son. He then fled the scene with the power washer and the package, which contained a Halloween costume for the son, according to police.
Culotta was identified as the suspect in the follow-up investigation and was taken into custody at America’s Best Value Inn in Smithtown (755 Smithtown Bypass) around 10 p.m.
Culotta was charged with second-degree burglary and petit larceny. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday, Oct. 24.
