Sheriff: Stop For Failing To Signal Leads To DWI Charge For Suffolk Woman

A woman driving with a blood-alcohol content nearly triple the legal limit was busted for alleged impaired driving during a traffic stop in Bay Shore, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office announced.

East Islip resident Meghan Matthews, 40, was stopped on Bay Shore Avenue in Bay Shore shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, when she failed to signal a right turn and was spotted by a Suffolk County Sheriff’s deputy.

While the deputy was attempting to stop her, she allegedly failed to stop, move over or yield for a short stretch. When she eventually stopped, the Sheriff’s Office said she demonstrated clues while performing standardized field sobriety tests indicating she was intoxicated.

Matthews was arrested and transported to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Station One, where a breathalyzer found she had a blood alcohol content of .22 percent. Matthews was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated and multiple vehicle and traffic violations.
