The stop of a car with a brake light out led to the discovery of a man driving drunk with his two young daughters in the car on a busy Long Island roadway.
It happened around 1:45 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 29 in Wantagh.
While on routine patrol, Nassau County Police Seventh Precinct officers observed Luis Carabello-Santiago, of Pennsylvania, operating a 2019 Kia Sorrento.
After the vehicle was observed with a defective brake light, officers activated their emergency lights and conducted a vehicle and traffic Law stop on the Sunrise Highway overpass of the Wantagh State Parkway, police said.
During the investigation, it was determined that Carabello-Santiago, emitted the odor of alcohol on his breath and had glassy eyes, according to police.
Carabello-Santiago's 10- and 6-year-old daughters were seated in the back of the vehicle, said police.
The children were released to their mother at the scene. No injuries were reported.
Carabello-Santiago was placed under arrest without incident.
Carabello-Santiago was charged with:
- two counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated (child under 16, Leandra’s Law),
- two counts of endangering the welfare of a child,
- two counts of driving while intoxicated,
- and multiple VTL infractions.
He was due to be arraigned on Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead.
