A man wielding a samurai sword was shot and killed by officers during a domestic incident on Long Island, police say.

It happened just after 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17 in Oceanside.

According to detectives, officers responded to a 911 call for a domestic incident on Columbus Avenue where a 36-year-old man in possession of various knives had a verbal dispute with his father and sister.

Upon police arrival, officers were interviewing the subject’s father when he entered the room holding knives and then a Samurai sword, police said.

Officers gave numerous commands to halt and drop the weapon. The man refused to comply and lunged at the officers. Both officers discharged their weapons to stop the threat, according to police.

Officers performed CPR and called for medical assistance. He was transported to an area hospital and pronounced dead at 6:48 pm.

The officers were also transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.

The investigation is ongoing.
