Nassau County Police First Precinct Officers responded to a call for a disturbance in Uniondale at 604 Jerusalem Avenue on Wednesday, Oct. 21 just before 8 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers were told that the defendant, Selvin Hernandez-Lopez, 18, of Uniondale, had fled on foot southbound on Amsterdam Avenue.
Officers were able to locate Hernandez-Lopez in the driveway of 612 Amsterdam Ave. where he was involved in a disturbance with two male victims, police said.
Hernandez-Lopez was holding a large knife at which point officers with their guns drawn ordered him to drop the knife several times, according to police.
Hernandez-Lopez refused to drop the knife and turned towards the officers in a threatening manner, said police.
After several more lawful orders to drop the knife were ignored, one of the officers deployed his electronic control device which incapacitated Hernandez-Lopez and allowed the officers to safely place him into police custody without further incident, police said.
Hernandez-Lopez was transported by a Nassau County Police Department Ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation.
Hernandez-Lopez has been charged with:
- two counts of second-degree menacing,
- two counts of menacing a police officer,
- fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
He was arraigned on Thursday, Oct. 22 in Mineola.
