Long Island Man Killed During Head-On Crash With School Bus In Suffolk

A Long Island man was killed after crashing into a school bus while allegedly driving erratically and crossing the double yellow line on the highway, police said.

John A. Caputo, age 31, of Valley Stream, was killed around 5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 10, in Riverhead.

According to detectives, the Riverhead Town Police received a report of an erratic driver in a silver Jeep Grand Cherokee failing to maintain its lane of travel, westbound on Sound Avenue.

The vehicle crossed over the double yellow line into eastbound traffic and stuck a Riverhead Central School District Bus which was traveling eastbound on Sound Avenue head-on, police said.

Responding Riverhead officers determined Caputo was not breathing and performed CPR at the scene before he was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The school bus was occupied by the driver and one passenger. The driver of the school bus, Ana Membreno Argueta, age 30, of Mastic, was later transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The student passenger reported no injuries. 

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks. 

The New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Team was requested to the scene to assist in the investigation.
