Officers from the Nassau County Police Department received a report of a crash involving a Honda CRV and school bus in the area of 9th Avenue in South Farmingdale at approximately 6:40 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 20.

It is alleged that the driver of the Honda, Farmingdale resident Richard Cirillo, age 42, was intoxicated at the time he struck the bus while traveling through the intersection of 9th Avenue and Woodward Avenue.

The 68-year-old school bus driver was the only one on board at the time of the crash, and he was uninjured, according to police.

Police said that while officers were attempting to place Cirillo under arrest, he lunged at them, and a struggle ensued that took both him and the officer to the ground.

It is alleged that Cirillo then tightened his body and refused to comply with officers’ commands. He was eventually subdued and placed under arrest.

During the struggle, one officer suffered an injury to his left shoulder and he was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Cirillo was charged with:

  • Second-degree assault;
  • Driving while intoxicated;
  • Resisting arrest;
  • Obstructing governmental administration.

Cirillo was held and scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at First District Court in Hempstead.
