The crashed occurred in Bethpage on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 10:35 a.m.
While traveling southbound on Stewart Avenue near the intersection of Linden Avenue, John Cappello, 30, of Massapequa, operating a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero, crossed over into oncoming traffic, Nassau County Police said.
The Montero then collided with a 2019 Nissan Rogue traveling northbound and operated by a 74-year-old woman, according to police.
As a result of the collision, the woman was transported to an area hospital and was later pronounced dead by a staff physician.
Her name is being withheld pending family notification.
Cappello was also transported to an area hospital and was admitted for a non-life threatening injury.
A subsequent investigation revealed that Cappello was operating his vehicle in an intoxicated condition and he was placed under arrest, police said.
Cappello was charged with:
- second-degree manslaughter,
- second-degree vehicular manslaughter,
- second-degree assault,
- driving while intoxicated.
He will be arraigned when medically practical, police said.
