Long Island Duo Nabbed for Drug Possession, Attacking Officers, Police Say

Two Long Island residents were charged with drug possession as part of a countywide operation against the use of opioids.

Nassau County residents Joseph Betz, age 31, of Franklin Square, and Nicolette Cicchetti, age 30, of North Valley Stream, were arrested on Sunday, Sept. 5, following a traffic stop.

According to detectives conducting an investigation in Franklin Square, information obtained led to the home of the Betz. 

Detectives spotted Betz exit his home and enter his black 2021 Chevy Camaro. Detectives conducted a traffic stop, and as they approached the Camaro, Betz accelerated backward at a high rate of speed before striking a tree, said the Nassau County Police.

He continued to accelerate in reverse and struck a parked Ford Explorer, according to police. 

As the detectives approached the vehicle again, Betz again accelerated forward at a high rate of speed towards the detectives causing them to leap out of the way to avoid being hit, police said.

Betz then jumped out of his vehicle and ran back into his home where he was met by detectives where he fought by violently resisting, kicking, and punching, pushing three officers down the stairs before being taken into custody, said police.

During a search of his home, officers found assorted pills, powders, and drug packaging materials in plain view in the defendant’s room and also found Cicchetti hiding under the bed, according to police.

She refused commands to come out and as Detectives attempted to place her into custody she began to violently resist, said police After another brief struggle, Cicchetti was also taken into custody.

Detectives were able to recover quantities of heroin, cocaine, alprazolam, and oxycodone from the residence. 

As a result of the violent actions of Betz, three detectives were transported to an area hospital for treatment of their injuries. 

Betz has been charged with:

  • Seven counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance
  • Five counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance
  • Two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance
  • Attempted assault
  • Three counts of assault
  • Resisting arrest
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Leaving the scene of an incident.

Cicchetti has been charged with:

  • Five counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance
  • Four counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance
  • Two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance
  • Two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance
  • Resisting arrest

 They are scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, Sept. 6, in Hempstead.
