The incident took place on Friday, Nov. 27, after Southampton Town were informed by Suffolk County Police that patrol units were in search of a vehicle that was involved in a vehicle pursuit after a man had stolen a vehicle in the county police district and led officers to the Southampton Town area, said Lt. Susan Ralph.

At the same time, Southampton Police received a call from a victim in Macy’s parking lot in Hampton Bays who had just had their purse forcibly stolen and the man left in the same vehicle that Suffolk County was looking for, Ralph said.

Southampton police located the man, identified as  Anthony Sala, 35, of Patchogue, who then led officers on a pursuit for several miles, Ralph said.

Sala eluded officers and subsequently stole another victim’s pocketbook in the Southampton area.

He then led officers in a pursuit and drove to Westhampton where he crashed into a fence at a local nursery causing damage and fled on foot, Ralph said.

Patrol officers apprehended Sala after a short foot pursuit.

Sala was arrested and charged with:

  • Two counts of robbery
  • Driving while intoxicated by drugs
  • Multiple traffic and vehicle violations

The Southampton Town Detective Division is continuing the investigation and additional charges will be considered after a review of the damage to the nursery property, Ralph added.

Additionally, Suffolk County Police will have additional charges.
