It happened around Saturday, Dec. 14 at approximately 7 p.m. in North Patchogue.
Deliela Gonzalez, 33, of Copiague, was driving a 2017 Honda sedan southbound in the right lane of North Ocean Avenue, south of Shaber Road, with her four children in the car when she attempted to make a U-turn in front of a southbound 2007 Mercedes-Benz sedan that was behind her in the left lane, Suffolk County Police said.
The Mercedes struck the Honda, causing both vehicles to slide across the roadway onto the northbound shoulder, police said.
Gonzalez’s 2-month-old son was transported via North Patchogue Rescue Ambulance to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue. The infant was then transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of critical injuries.
Gonzalez and her three daughters, ages 13, 8, and 4 years old, were transported to Long Island Community Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Mercedes, Jeremy Layton, 33, of Islip Terrace, was transported to the same hospital with minor injuries.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
