The incident took place around 9:40 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 17, when the 43-year-old man was working on his vehicle near the intersection of Hempstead Turnpike and Loring Road in Levittown, said Nassau County Police.

According to police, the victim put a jack under the vehicle and extended it to lift the vehicle off the ground so he could inspect underneath it.

As he was lying under the vehicle lying face up, parallel to the road, the jack gave out. The vehicle collapsed on top of the man, trapping him with one of his arms across his chest, restricting his breathing, police said.

The vehicle hit the side of the curb, preventing it from fully collapsing on top of the victim.

Officers responded to the scene and were able to put the jack back under the vehicle and used it to lift the vehicle up slightly to decrease pressure on the man’s chest as he could not breathe.

Several Nassau County Emergency Service Unit officers responded to the scene and deployed a Power Mat rescue bag, which is capable of lifting approximately 17 tons each, under the vehicle.

They inflated the bag, slowly lifting the vehicle off the ground; allowing the man to slide himself from underneath.

The man was assessed by a Nassau County Police medic at the scene and declined any further medical treatment.
