Nassau County Police officers, while on routine patrol, discovered the single-vehicle crash in Bethpage involving a gray 2020 Subaru Rx, which struck a utility pole at Central Avenue and Hicksville Road around 1 a.m. Tuesday, June 29.
The driver was removed from the vehicle safely, police said.
At the scene of the accident, officers detected the odor of natural gas and began evacuating the immediate area while notifying National Grid and PSEG.
A perimeter was set up and National Grid determined that the situation required a specialized unit.
Officers quickly began evacuating multiple residences and widening their perimeter for the safety of the public and precautionary measures.
The Red Cross was notified and is on the scene to assist in the evacuation process. Bethpage Fire Department is also assisting on the scene.
At approximately 4:20 a.m. the gas line was shut off while being repaired and residents returned to their homes.
