Former West Islip Fire Chief Jeffrey Kempf Dies At 60

Jeffrey "Jocko" Kempf Sr., 60, a commissioner and former chief of the West Islip Fire Department died Saturday, Aug. 10,  following a nine-month battle with bone and lung cancer.

Born in 1959 in East Meadow, Kemp later moved to West Islip, where he graduated from West Islip High School.

He joined the West Islip Fire Department in 1976, when he was 17-years-old, and rose through the ranks to the rank of chief, which he served as twice, from 1994 to 1996 and again from 1998 until 2000. He served with the department for 43 years.

He also worked as a truck driver for Slomin’s home heating oil firm.

Kemp is survived by his wife  Bernadette; son Jeffrey Kemp Jr.; daughter, Jennifer Schweigert, husband Alby and their children, daughter-in-law, Samantha; and grandson Jeffrey Kemp III. He was predeceased by a daughter, Crystal Ann.

Visitation will be at the West Islip Firehouse, 309 Union Boulevard from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, and on Tuesday, Aug. 13, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. 

A service will be held at the West Islip Firehouse at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13. The funeral will be held at the firehouse at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, and burial will follow at the North Babylon Cemetery.
