A student at a Long Island school is hospitalized after he was stabbed by another student on campus, authorities said.

Emergency crews in Lindenhurst were called at around 12:30 p.m. Monday, March 27, with reports of a stabbing in a second-floor hallway at Lindenhurst Middle School, located on North Wellwood Avenue.

According to Suffolk County Police, a 12-year-old boy stabbed a 13-year-old boy in the upper leg, near his groin, with a 6 inch knife. A school employee applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding, and police applied a second tourniquet when they arrived.

The 13-year-old student was flown by helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he underwent surgery, police said. At a news conference Monday afternoon, police said the teen was in critical but stable condition.

“He lost a lot of blood,” Sean Beran, deputy inspector with the Suffolk County Police Department, told reporters.

The student believed to be behind the attack was arrested at the school on a charge of juvenile delinquency.

Nobody else was injured in the stabbing, which police said followed a dispute between the teens. Police did not speculate on what exactly the boys were fighting about.

“Horrible. Absolutely horrible,” Beran said of the attack. “That’s somebody’s son.”

The incident sent the campus into a lockdown, which has since been lifted.

Suffolk County Police asked anyone with information to contact the agency at 631-854-8152.
