A 45-year-old Long Island man who went missing earlier this month has been found dead, Suffolk County Police announced Friday morning, July 26.

The body of Thomas Kelsey of Centereach was discovered in his vehicle in West Islip on Thursday, July 25. 

A passerby observed the vehicle in a ravine off Route 231 and called 911 at approximately 8:30 p.m., police said.

Third Squad detectives believe Kelsey was driving his 2015 GMC Yukon northbound on Route 231 in North Babylon when the vehicle left the roadway, crossed a large grass median and crashed into a ravine in West Islip. 

Kelsey was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. 

The cause of death is believed to be non-criminal.

Original report, Wednesday, July 10:

A 45-year-old man drove off in his sports utility vehicle and hasn't been seen since, and authorities are asking the public for help in locating him.

Thomas Kelsey, 45, of Barbara Drive in Centereach, went missing on Sunday, July 7 at 10 p.m. at Venetian Shores Park, 850 Venetian Blvd. in Lindenhurst, Suffolk County Police said.

Kelsey was reportedly driving his red 2015 GMC Yukon, with New York State license plate EYE 9312. (See the second image above.) He may have been wearing brown shoes, plaid shorts, and a T-shirt, according to police.

Kelsey was reported missing to police by an acquaintance on Tuesday, July 9 at approximately 1:30 a.m., detectives said.

The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652 or 911.
