Joanne Drenckhahn, a frontline worker during the pandemic, and an emergency room nurse, was admitted to a hospital in Mineola last week after suffering a heart ailment that could likely lead to her needing a new heart, according to a fundraiser set up to help with her medical care.
A mother of two young children, Joanne has been transferred to a hospital in New York City for a higher level of care, the fundraiser said.
She also underwent surgery to have a biventricular assist device installed to help her heart pump as she has a chance to rest.
"Every person blessed to know Joanne aka "Jo" or "JoJo" has been touched by her smile, her kindness, her generous heart, her steadfast friendship, and her uplifting personality," said the fund's organizer Heidi Pierluissi.
To date, the fund has raised more than $73,000 with a goal of $100,000.
Pierluissi said Joanne remains critically ill, but her heart "is fighting hard to keep her with us."
All funds raised will be used for her medical costs and to care for her two boys.
"She is resting and we know she would be so overwhelmed with the genuine kindness and care she and her family are receiving," Pierluissi said. "From all of us to you, thank you for your continued love, support, and prayers."
