The grocery giant announced that it spent $133 million to remodel 21 stores in Suffolk County to “improve the in-store experience for local customers.” Improvements began in January and ended this week, the company stated.

Improvements - which vary by store - include new cafes, an expanded selection of prepared foods and local produce, new checkout options, more grocery options, and lower prices on select items.

Stop & Shop currently has 51 stores across Long Island, and is the largest grocer in the area. The changes come on the heels of the company announcing its plans to buy 32 King Kullen locations, five Wild by Nature organic supermarkets on Long Island and the King Kullen corporate office in Bethpage.

Other proposed improvements for Stop & Shop locations in the Northeast include a do-it-yourself olive oil and vinegar blender, a more seamless “Scan It!” experience and online or mobile shopping options.

According to Stop & Shop President Mark McGowan, the new look will “reflect a more customer-centric strategy, based on convenience,” as well as a wider selection of fresh, local food products. Improvements reportedly include an in-store smoker, poke bowl and taqueria stations.

“We recognize that our customer is changing, and we’re evolving our entire shopping experience to better serve them,” McGowan said in a statement. “They’re focused on getting back to their lives, juggling many responsibilities, and we want to make grocery shopping even easier and faster for them. Hartford is the first step in our journey towards repositioning our brand for future success and in helping our communities enjoy better food and better lives.”
