Two women are facing felony larceny charges following a string of larcenies in Putnam County in which authorities say stolen credits were used to make purchases in four neighboring counties.

The larcenies occurred in the towns of Philipstown, Putnam Valley and Kent, Putnam County Sheriff, Robert L. Langley Jr. said.

During the past three weeks, the sheriff’s department, along with the New York State Park Police, received several complaints from hikers who, upon returning to their parked cars, discovered the cars had been rummaged through and personal items were stolen from within.

The property reported stolen consisted of loose change, pocketbooks and wallets containing credit cards, money and identifications. The thefts in Philipstown occurred along the Route 9D corridor from Sandy Beach/Stony Point to Breakneck Ridge Mountain and in the area of Route 301 through Fahnestock State Park in the Towns of Philipstown, Putnam Valley and Kent.

The stolen credit cards were used for unauthorized purchases made at businesses in Dutchess, Orange, Westchester and Fairfield counties, Langley said.

An investigation using security footage developed a description of two women and a vehicle they were using, according to Langley.

A sheriff’s Investigator driving on Route 301 through Fahnestock State Park on Wednesday, July 10, observed what was believed to be the suspects' vehicle parked unoccupied in a parking area of Canopus Lake in the Town of Putnam Valley.

The NYS Park Police were notified and assisted with observing the vehicle until the two women emerged from a trail and got into the car and started to leave.

An investigation by sheriff’s investigators and the park police determined that the women were the same suspects involved in the rash of the reported thefts in the area, said Langley. The suspects were arrested and transported to the sheriff’s department for further investigation by Sheriff’s Investigators and the NYS Park Police Detective Division and Patrol.

The suspects arrested and charged with multiple counts of fourth-degree grand larceny (a felony) were Megan M. Gonzalez, 25, and Kimberly B. Greer, 24, both of Fishkill. Gonzalez and Greer were released without bail pending court appearances in multiple jurisdictions.
