Maceo B. Lewis, 23, first brandished the gun to a security guard in Poughkeepsie of the Eastmin & Bixby apartments on 22 Montgomery St. at approximately 11:38 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, said City of Poughkeepsie police.

The guard reported the incident to police, who responded to the area.

A detective reportedly located a man who matched the guard's description shortly after the incident was reported on Delafield Street near Spruce Street. The man ran southbound down Delafield Street, police said, when he saw the officer approaching.

Numerous officers and detectives chased the Lewis, police said, catching up to him and partaking in a brief physical struggle in the area of 52 Delafield Street.

A large group of preschoolers and elementary school children witnessed the incident from the fenced-in playground of the Astor School on 50 Delafield Street, police said, and were subsequently shepherded into the building by school staff and placed under lockdown.

No staff or children were harmed, and City of Poughkeepsie officers reportedly notified the school when the situation was under control.

Lewis was charged with the felonies of second and third-degree possession of a weapon and the misdemeanor of second-degree menacing.

The incident is still under investigation, and police ask anyone who witnessed the incident or with pertinent information to call the city police tip line at 845-451-7577.
