A man who was found fatally shot after the shooter called police admitting to the crime has been identified by police.

Mark Johnson Jr., 21, of the City of Poughkeepsie, was found around 12:09 p.m., Monday, Dec. 9, when officers responded to the area of Morgan Avenue after the unidentified shooter called the police, said City of Poughkeepsie Police Det. Lt. Matt Clark.

Responding officers found Johnson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Clark said.

He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:58 p.m. A handgun was recovered from under his body, police said.

The shooter, a 24-year-old Poughkeepsie resident, waited at the scene for police to arrive. He claimed self-defense to and requested an attorney.

The shooter, who had a license to carry a weapon, had unloaded the handgun used prior to police arrival and placed it on the front seat of his vehicle and turned it over to the police.

He was brought to police headquarters where he was assigned a public defender. The public defender invoked his right not to speak.

Two witnesses came to the police headquarters and gave statements as to what they saw and heard.

The shooter was released from custody pending a grand jury investigation.

The investigation into this incident is continuing. Anyone who may have witnessed the shooting is asked to call the City of Poughkeepsie Police at 845-451-7577.
