The incident took place around 1 a.m., Sunday, April 11, on Main Street in the City of Beacon, said Detective Sergeant Jason Johnson of the City of Beacon Police Department.

According to Johnson, the 64-year man called Dutchess County 911 and stated that he was sitting in his vehicle doused in gasoline with explosives and a loaded firearm.

He also threatened to use them if anyone approached, Johnson said.

Officers located the man in his vehicle and cordoned off the area. Extra shift personnel was called in and assistance was sought from the state police as well as the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office who activated their Crisis Negotiation Unit.

The man spoke with the Dutchess County 911 operator, a negotiator from the Sheriff’s Office, and finally a member of the Beacon Police Department.

He eventually agreed to surrender after approximately two hours and he was transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital for a mental health evaluation, Johnson said.

An inventory of the vehicle found a gas can; however, no weapons or explosives were located, he added.

Mobile Life Support Ambulance along with the Beacon Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
