POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Poughkeepsie resident Gertrude Antonia Carroll died on Tuesday, Feb. 16. She was 97.
Carroll was the great-granddaughter of William Belton, who was an early settler of Poughkeepsie. She graduated from State University of New York at New Paltz with a teaching degree. She attended her 60th college reunion at SUNY New Paltz. She taught in the Poughkeepsie schools.
Following her teaching career, Carroll worked as a secretary at IBM, in Poughkeepsie. She was an avid reader who also enjoyed gardening, needlework, interior decorating, antiques and tutoring. She was active with Poughkeepsie's Gardening Club and the Friends of the Poughkeepsie Public Library District. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Poughkeepsie.
She is survived by Pauline Halladeen, Nancy Mulvey, Cathy Strang, and other family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Catherine Mulvey Carroll, and her siblings, Mary, Robert and Thomas.
Visiting hours will be from 10:30-11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at St. Mary's Church, 231 Church St., in Poughkeepsie. A mass will follow, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's, and burial will follow in the family plot, in St. Peter's Cemetery, in Poughkeepsie.
