POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- A Poughkeepsie man was sentenced to nine months in federal prison this week for charging the cockpit of a plane leaving an airport in Virginia and screaming “Jihad,” according to a report by the Poughkeepsie Journal.
According to multiple media reports, David Patrick Diaz, 36, admitted to “interfering” with the crew and terrifying passengers aboard a United Airlines flight to Denver in 2015, forcing the pilot to return to Dulles International Airport.
Diaz’s lawyer said his client struggles with mental illness and alcohol addiction, the Poughkeepsie Journal article said.
Diaz, who was swearing and shouting that the plane was going to crash, was tackled and subdued by two passengers, the Poughkeepsie Journal report said.
According to NBC News, Diaz was ordered to undergo mental health and substance abuse treatment.
He must also complete three years of supervised release and pay restitution of $22,152 to the airline, the NBC News report said.
