The new order could remain in effect through the weekend or longer if officials see a need for it, according to a statement.
The original order, which was given at a midnight on Tuesday, initially covered only those areas deemed snow emergency routes, officials said. As of Thursday afternoon, the snow emergency had grown into a city-wide initiative, according to officials.
The snow piled up on city streets and near intersections is causing visibility issues for drivers and pedestrians, officials said, adding school children are also among those being affected by the snowfall.
The wider snow emergency aims to provide the city with a greater ability to remove cars from the street if necessary in order to facilitate snow removal, according to officials, who said snow removal operations are “necessary to provide safe passage and transit throughout the city.”
To remove the snow from streets, sidewalks and transport secondary locations, the city is utilizing both city resources and private contractors, according to officials.
