An out-of-control fight at Poughkeepsie High School caused a "hold-in-place" at the school as well as a large police response.

The incident took place around 12:56 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18, when the City of Poughkeepsie Police received a call for help from school security, said City of Poughkeepsie Police Chief Richard T. Wilson.

According to the chief, numerous members of the department responded including patrol, traffic, detectives and supervisors.

Arriving officers assisted school district security in restoring order within the area of the school’s offices, Wilson said.

Additionally, officers used mediation, as well as crisis intervention techniques in an attempt to temper the people involved.

Parents/guardians of certain students involved were summoned to the school to pick up their children, Wilson said.

The verbal altercations continued until students left the school grounds and immediate area with their parents/guardians.

Police then assisted school personnel with releasing the ordered school hold-in-place.

There were no arrests or reported injuries to any students or school personnel, the chief said.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Eric Rosser said an internal investigation into the incident is underway.

“We will work with staff and external partners to provide students with services to address their conflict," Rosser said. "Any student found to have violated our district code of conduct will be disciplined accordingly.”
