The United Way is kicking off its 2016 campaign by honoring Poughkeepsie resident Sheila Appel on Sept. 15 at 7:30 a.m. at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel.

Appel is IBM's US Regional Director for Corporate Citizenship Initiatives. Appel was appointed by the New York State Commissioner of Education to serve on the state Standards and Practices Board for Teaching, and appointed by SUNY Chancellor to serve on the Strategic Planning Committee for Higher Education in New York State. She was recently recognized as one of the top 100 women leaders in the Hudson Valley region.

She currently is Board Chair for United Way of New York State and serves on the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board.

Last year, more than 270 Hudson Valley business people, nonprofit organization leaders, donors, and longtime United Way volunteers were in attendance at the breakfast program.
