The new Poughkeepsie eatery, which quietly opened Friday, Oct. 20, also does Asian-style tacos as well as tacos with a German touch a la Schatzi's Pub, its sister restaurant -- which happens to be next door - -created by Owner Jeremy Phillips.

"Just like Schatzi's is all over the map, we're trying to combine unique flavors," he told Daily Voice. "We're not your standard quote/unquote Mexican place."

There, are, however, in tribute to the Latin American country, 120 tequilas to choose from.

You'll also find options like salads, rice bowls, nachos, quesadillas and avocado egg rolls. "In some cases, we try to push the envelope but we also have enough staples to keep diners happy," said Phillips.

Milo's Cantina was formerly Queen City Bistro. When it became available, Phillips said he jumped at the opportunity. Even when he opened Schatzy's, he had visions of seeing a casual Mexican taqueria in Poughkeepsie.

He took possession of the place about a year ago and redid everything, from the paint to the lighting fixtures.

"Folks used to say I was crazy to open a restaurant on the 200 block of Main Street Poughkeepsie," he said. "Now, they tell me it's the nicest block.

"I'm hopeful the opening of Milo's Cantina adds to the momentum Poughkeepsie has and keeps the city moving in a positive direction."

Milo's Cantina is at 206 Main St., 845-345-9458.
