An 18-year-old Bay Shore man was driving a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder westbound on Motor Parkway between Hoffman Lane and Veterans Memorial Highway when the vehicle became disabled in the roadway, Suffolk County Police said.

A 57-year-old Bay Shore man, now identified as Federico Oviedo, who was driving a 2003 Toyota minivan, stopped behind the Nissan to offer assistance.

As the two men walked behind the minivan to remove tools from the trunk, they were struck by a 2001 Dodge Durango driven by a 22-year-old woman at approximately 6:20 p.m.

Oviedo was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

The driver of the Nissan was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The vehicles were impounded for a safety check. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
