Somers' Realbuto Makes Section 1 Wrestling History

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- When Somers’ Brian Realbuto first wrestled in the Section 1 Large School 96-pound final as a seventh-grader, it was the start of a record-setting run.

Even though Realbuto lost that year, he would rebound to win four consecutive Section 1 titles. Realbuto made history Sunday by winning his fifth championship in the Section 1 Large School Wrestling Championships/New York State Qualifier at Pace University.

The Cornell-bound Realbuto pinned Brewster’s Kyle McAlpin in one minute 18 seconds, further establishing himself as the best wrestler in Section 1 history. Realbuto is looking to continue his record run when he attempts to become Section 1’s first three-time New York State champion.

The New York State Wrestling Championships are Friday and Saturday, Feb 24 and 25, at the Times Union Center in Albany.

“It feels great and I am happy I finished out my sectional career on a high note,” said Realbuto, now 43-1 on the season.

Along with his two state championships, Realbuto has a fourth-place finish (eighth-grade) and a second-place finish (sophomore year).
