SOMERS, N.Y. The Kennedy Catholic girls basketball team had 10 of its 12 players score in a balanced offensive attack Friday and the Gaels overwhelmed visiting Hastings 60-17 in the opening round of the Section 1 Class B basketball tournament.
The fourth-seeded Gaels ran to a first-quarter lead of 20-4 and extended that lead to 34-10 at halftime to roll over the 13th-seeded Yellow Jackets.
Kennedy advances to next weeks quarterfinal round where it will host No. 5 Briarcliff Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Shayna Gaskin led Kennedy with 13 points, Leah Geene scored 11 and Sara Dowd added eight points. The Kennedy defense allowed four, six, four and three points over the four quarters to seal the easy win. Hastings managed to make just six field goals.
Kelsey Barry scored five points and Lea Distlehurst added four for Hastings.
