Visitors Flock to Somers to Celebrate at Muscoot

Spring at Muscoot Farm. The flowers are blooming, the farmers market is open and -- most exciting of all -- the animal babies have arrived!

The Daily Somers spent an afternoon at Muscoot enjoying the children enjoying the animals.

Hundreds of children (and their parents or minders) were on hand to “Meet the Baby Animals” on Sunday. They came from all over. Kyle Chan and his parents drove up from Great Neck. Little Julia Baker, 2-1/2, came from Dobbs Ferry. Julia’s father remembered how his childhood friends enjoyed volunteering at Muscoot and he wanted to share the experience with Julia.

Derek Pember was celebrating his fifth birthday, complete with birthday hats and balloons. Derek will turn five in a few weeks but his mom wanted to combine the birthday party with the Muscoot visit because she thought the kids would love it.

Among the new arrivals were eight black and white Babydoll Southdown lambs, born between April 5 and 30. Southdown sheep are known to be hardy and docile.

There are seven new Jacob lambs, unusual because their fleece is white with black spots and both males and females have horns -- sometimes as many as six horns!

Pineapple, one of the farm’s Jersey cows, known for their gentle nature and intelligence, has a lovely new calf, appropriately named Pine Nut.

And then there are a bunch of chicks -- Golden Polish, Buff Laced Polish, Partridge Cochins, Silver Laced Cochins and Blue Cochins.

Volunteers, togged out in bright red T-shirts, held the babies and monitored the petting. The children certainly enjoyed it all. Quite possibly the animals did, too.
