State Police Remind Motorists to Take Care Over Holidays

SOMERS, N.Y. - Major Michael A. Kopy, Troop K Commander of the New York State Police, is reminding all motorists to be extra careful during the holiday season.

“The Christmas holiday period is traditionally a time of shopping, parties and celebrations,” he said on Wednesday. “Motorists and families will be traveling our roadways in great numbers, and drivers should take steps to ensure a safe trip for everyone in the car.”

State Police will be doing additional sobriety checks during the holidays, Kopy said. Police will also be watching for impaired drivers, speeders, improperly buckled vehicle occupants, cell phone usage and other violators. Someone is killed in a traffic accident every 30 minutes due to the effects of alcohol or drugs, Kopy said.

“Too often, police officers witness first-hand the tragic and often needless loss of life resulting from highway crashes,” he said. “We’re encouraging the public to make wise choices this holiday period, helping us to prevent needless tragedies during what should be a time of joy and celebration.”

In other news, Ciara Fedele, 24, of Somers, was arrested on Tuesday for driving while impaired by drugs, criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Fedele was involved in an auto accident on Route 202 in Somers, involving property damage. Investigation revealed her possession of marijuana and other substances not prescribed to her. She was also determined to be operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs. She is due to appear at Somers Town Court on December 19 at 5:30 p.m.
