Somers Senior Captures Football In Photos

SOMERS, N.Y. – Somers High School senior and professional photographer Rebecca Bosley learned about digital photography from her grandfather, contrary to the usual scenario where grandpa learns about technology from his grandchild.

“I started creative photography when I was 12, but I began taking professional photos about two years ago,” said Bosley. She was hired by the Somers High School football team to cover the games in pictures. This involves attending every game and taking 600 to 800 shots per game.

“When I go over them later, I come up with about 70,” she said. “It’s better to take more pictures than you’ll use. When I go through them, I look for the ones that are very clear and in focus. I hardly ever crop or manipulate.”

She uploads the final group to her website and to the Somers football website and sends links to football parents. Pictures can be dragged off the web page to your desktop.

“I wasn’t too happy at first because I couldn’t go to the game with my friends – I had to work. It hasn’t been easy, because when I started I didn’t really know anything about football, so I had to watch which direction the ball was going in. Now that I’ve learned the game, my photos have improved.”

Bosley said she walks back and forth on the side lines. One of the biggest challenges is “not getting hit by the ball. It’s come close a few times.” She has to be careful about getting caught up in the spirit of the game and losing sight of her task.

The 17-year-old uses a Canon 7D camera and shoots manually. “I’m able to switch lenses, depending on the shot and the lighting,” she said. She also does pictures for the Somers High School newspaper and yearbook. “I’m doing some portraits and self-portraits, too, but the sports has been very interesting."

How is the football team doing? “We’ve only had two games so far, but they’re looking pretty good.”

Bosley’s photographs make the team and the crowd look good. For a look, click here.
