For those heroics, White Castle inducted Cash into its "Cravers Hall of Fame" on Monday, Oct. 28. The ceremony for the Class of 2013 was held in Columbus, Ohio, where White Castle’s home office is located.
"I've been a lifelong White Castle Craver and I'm very happy and honored that White Castle recognized my story," said Cash. "For some of these children, it was their first time eating White Castle, so I like to think I started a whole generation of Cravers."
Cash, who grew up in the Bronx, considers himself a dedicated Craver for nearly 50 years. However, his most memorable White Castle moment came in that fateful summer night when he was working as an assistant director for a summer day camp.
The children where taken to a rural campground in Rockland County to spend the day swimming, playing games, cooking out and sitting by a campfire. About 100, 8-10 year old boys and girls were to spend the night in the woods.
Later in the evening, around 9:30 p.m., a severe storm hit forcing the campers to seek shelter at a Jewish Community Center in the Bronx.
After getting settled in, Cash drove to the nearest White Castle restaurant at about 2 a.m. and purchased 400 sliders and 126 orders of French fries. He said the children were excited when he returned to the community center with the aroma of White Castle.
“We’re always fascinated by the lengths Cravers will go to feed their insatiable desire for ‘The Original Slider,’” Jamie Richardson, vice president at White Castle, said. “This elite honor is truly dedicated to those Cravers who make these memorable moments and show their loyalty to the Crave.”
The Cravers Hall of Fame was launched in 2001 to celebrate and honor White Castle’s most loyal fans. The judges set criteria to evaluate each story based on the following: brand loyalty, creative presentation, originality and magnitude of the Crave. From 675 entries, 10 stories were chosen for this year’s class.
“The Cravers Hall of Fame is the way White Castle shows our appreciation for the loyalty and dedication of our fans,” Richardson said.
Since the launch of Cravers Hall of Fame in 2001, 147 inductees have been honored with this distinguished award.
