Somers Loses Another War Veteran

Just a day after its colorful Memorial Day celebration, Somers lost another World War II veteran and involved citizen. Salvatore Cafiero passed away on Tuesday at the age of 84.

Cafiero worked as an accountant for General Foods and spent almost all of his spare time in altruistic pursuits. He served as a board member of the National Society for Autistic Children and Group Residences (Westchester Chapter) and was an active leader in the Boy Scouts. He was treasurer of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8213. And, when he found time, he performed pro bono accounting work for AARP members. He was an involved member of his church community and a generous supporter of many other charities and organizations.

Survivors include his sons, Steve and Gerard, and his daughter, Lisa Seymour. He is also mourned by his long-term companion, Patricia Cummings. Cummings said that Cafiero was "a very good person, a very exceptional man."

The family will receive family and friends on Tuesday, June 7 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Road, Katonah, (914) 232-3033.

Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, June 8 at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick’s Stone Church, 188 Church Place, Yorktown Heights, (914) 962-5050.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to CLC Foundation c/o Sal Cafiero Memorial Fund, Community Living Corporation Foundation, Inc., 600 Bedford Road, Mount Kisco, NY 10549. All donations will be used for capital improvements to the group home where Gerard Cafiero lives.
