Canadian Vacationer Gives Hospital a Rave Review

Ellen King was understandably anxious when she slipped on a piece of ice in January and was rushed to a hospital thousands of miles from her Canadian hometown.

The fall, which occurred during her Christmas vacation in Somers, N.Y., caused her to break her hip and develop a blood clot.

“I have Canadian feet. The British Columbians call them “le pied Canadien,” King said. “I thought I was used to the ice but I stepped on a piece that was covered in snow so I fell.”

Her nerves were assuaged though as soon as she arrived in the emergency room at Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt. King found two nurses particularly helpful, Kathy and Melissa. She appreciated their patience in answering all her questions and catering to her every need.

“When I rang the bell, someone was there immediately. Every pain medication I asked for, I got, and every time they gave me medication they explained what it was for."

She also had only glowing compliments for her doctor there, Dr. Egesta Mani of The Westchester Medical Practice, calling her services “excellent.”

That care didn’t end once King was discharged from the hospital, though. She was seen by representatives of the Visiting Nurse Association of Hudson Valley, who routinely dropped by to check on her progress. She is still taking a blood thinner medication to help shrink the clot, but will be able to return to Canada in the next month.

“Overall, I just felt really safe and in very good hands when I was there. I had confidence in all of them,” King said.
