WEST NYACK, N.Y. -- Jacob Berkowitz is the one. The Scarsdale senior is the only wrestler from Westchester County who will be wrestling in the second annual New York/New Jersey All-Star Wrestling Challenge on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Clarkstown South High School.
Berkowitz, the 2012 Section 1 Division I 182-pound champion and state finalist, will be joined by North Rocklands Mike Caputo, the 2012 Section 1 Division I 145-pound titlist and state fourth-place finisher.
Its really exciting to be the only Westchester wrestler chosen and one of only two wrestlers from Section 1, said Berkowitz, who will attend Binghamton University and wrestle next year. Its nice to represent Section 1 as well as New York.
Each lineup features either state champions or state place finishers. The teams will be wrestling for charity with New York representing Pinning Down Autism, and New Jersey for The Adam Frey Foundation.
Berkowitz, who registered a program-best 51-3 record, will face state champion Dallas Winston from Jackson Memorial High School. Winston went 33-3. Caputo, who was 47-5, meets state titlist Lenny Richardson of St. Peters Prep.
I dont know that much about Dallas, Berkowitz said. I just know that hes good and a very tough wrestler. I think that all of the matches are going to be battles and its going to be a great event to watch.
