Scarsdale Students Set To Return To School Tuesday

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Scarsdale schools will once again open their doors to students Tuesday, with several new staff members and improvements completed on certain infrastructure issues.

After utilizing co-principals last year, the Scarsdale High School has chosen Kenneth Bonamo to take over the top spot this year. Bonamo, who formerly was at the helm of Townshend Harris High School in New York City, fills the vacancy left by the resignation of longtime principal John Klemme. Fred Goldberg and Kelley Hamm assumed principal duties in his absence during the last school year.

The Scarsdale school board also will welcome several staff members who have completed their mandatory probationary period and have earned tenure.

Duncan Wilson, Leila El-Chehabi, Sydney Lipez, Caitlin Saladino, Kevin Blake, Bethany Unterberger, Maria Vasconez, Jennifer Banash, Cristal Edwards, Jessica Slotwinski, Jessica Williams, Vanessa Blood, Sheilah Chason, Nicola Minchillo and Nancy Thompson each were appointed Sept. 1.

Outside of the new staff members, students may notice the maintenance staff has been hard at work during the summer to make several improvements to schools.

The non-functioning ventilation system has been replaced in the Edgewood Elementary School gym. At Heathcote Elementary, asbestos has been removed above the stage, and the out-dated lighting and stage-rigging system have been replaced with new equipment.

At the middle school, the CHOICE building was repaired, and the exterior emergency route stairs were replaced and widened. In the high school, boilers and heat pumps were connected to emergency generators.

Elementary students will have a half day Tuesday, while the middle school enjoys its first full day of classes. In the high school, freshmen will have the opportunity to explore their new surroundings at a new student orientation
