Scarsdale Almanac: Edgewood Elementary School

Rising alongside an apple orchard, Edgewood Elementary School was built in 1919 to help young children grow as students.

Although playgrounds, sports fields and houses have replaced the orchard, the school at 1 Roosevelt Place continues to nurture budding Scarsdale students.

Scott Houseknecht has been the principal of Edgewood since 1990. In 2010 there were about 436 Edgewood students in grades kindergarten through fifth, with a class-size average of 20 students. Sixty-five percent of 2010 Edgewood students were white, 21 percent were Asian or Pacific Islander, five percent were Hispanic and one percent were Black or African American, according to the 2010 New York State School Report Card.

In addition to traditional curriculum, Edgewood students have opportunities to get involved in the Classical Café -- lunchtime performances organized, produced and performed by students, the Edgewood School Historical Society and the Edgewood School Media Club.
