SCARSDALE, N.Y. Neither rain nor gray skies dampened the enthusiasm of kindergartners in bright rain coats and colorful umbrellas as they started school for the first time Tuesday when Scarsdales seven public schools opened for the 2011-2012 school year.
At Edgewood Elementary School, five-year olds Sophie Pymm and Emily Smith both reported loving their first day at school. We drawed pictures about being at school, Sophie said excitedly. And I played with my friend Cole.
For Emily, the introductory half-days of school for kindergartners may have felt too short. A few hours after returning home on her first day, Emily told her mother she wanted to go back to school now.
Its extremely exciting to see her enjoy school, and to get to know new people, her mother, Susan Smith, said. The school has lots of activities and so much to offer. Were really going to enjoy it.
Both Sophie and Emily also agreed that the best period thus far has been snack time. It was my favorite, Sophie declared.
Kindergartners will begin attending full days of school Oct. 3, a move that was initiated last year.
