To the Editor:
I took part in a press conference this morning at the White Plains Library along with fellow Assembly members Sandy Galef, David Buchwald and former Assemblyman Richard Brodsky. We were joined by Rachael Fauss, the director of public policy for Citizens Union.
The purpose of the press conference was to urge the public to vote yes on Proposals One and Two, which will appear on the ballot on Election Day. These constitutional amendments would create a redistricting commission and create a paperless legislature to improve the redistricting process in New York state, thus saving the taxpayers money.
It may seem strange that we, as incumbents, are asking the voters to change a redistricting process that favors incumbents. It is because the current process permits gerrymandering, a long-standing practice that favors a political party or a particular incumbent. This longtime practice must end if we are to reclaim our integrity in government here in New York state. We are asking people all over the world to hold fair and transparent elections, we must begin at home.
The second proposal would make the Assembly more environmentally friendly and technologically friendly while continuing to provide adequate time for legislators to review bills before voting.
