Scarsdale patrol officers conducting DWI enforcement on Post Road on Sunday morning spotted a 2009 Acura traveling at a high rate of speed, crossing the pavement markings multiple times. When police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle began to slow down in the right lane, striking the curb and accelerating away, prompting a pursuit.
Minutes later, members of the Eastchester Police Department and EMS were dispatched to a vehicle rollover on Post Road and Hilldale Place, where officers said it was the same car that had fled from police in Scarsdale.
Upon arrival, officers from Scarsdale said they were informed by police in Eastchester that a black man - later identified as 30-year-old Jayron Whitted - wearing an orange and black soccer jersey had crawled out of the vehicle and run down Club Way. He would eventually be spotted and detained running in the vicinity of Park Drive and Leewood Drive.
Police said that Whitted was covered in sweat and had visible cuts on his arms. Officers said that while speaking to him, his eyes were bloodshot, his eyes were watery, he had slurred speech and there was a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Whitted was transported to Westchester Medical Center for treatment to his injuries and he refused to submit to a blood test to determine his blood alcohol content.
Whitted was arraigned while still at the hospital and charged with felony counts of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He was also charged with use of a loaned vehicle without an interlock device and unlawful fleeing of a police officer, misdemeanors. Whitted was also cited for speeding and failure to obey a police officer.
It was also determined that Whitted has an active bench warrant that was issued by the New York Police Department for “failure to make payment” as part of a conditional discharge from the previous DWI conviction. He has been remanded to the Westchester County Jail and is due back in court later this year.
