K9 Officer Radar, who served the Kent Police Department in Putnam County for nearly a decade, died on Tuesday, March 21 after an aggressive illness, the department announced.

Joining the department in 2013, Radar formed a quick bond with his handler, Detective Sergeant Alex Vanderwoude, and enjoyed a successful career up until his retirement in January 2022.

During this time, he recovered narcotics, caught felons, and even reunited loved ones with their families, the department said.

He was also known for having a "gentle side and a gentle heart," officers said in their announcement of Radar's death.

Before he began his journey over the rainbow bridge, Radar enjoyed one last ride in a patrol car and was escorted by his fellow officers.

"Rest easy Radar, thank you for your service and commitment to not only to the Town of Kent Police Department, but to our community. You will truly be missed," the department said.

Officers added that it has been a "devastating week" for the department, as they also lost seven-year-old K9 officer Maverick on Sunday, March 19 after he suffered an unexpected medical emergency.

"We thank you all for your support," Kent Police said on social media in the wake of the tragedies.
