Stephen Broege, 43, was arrested shortly before midnight on Saturday after he was pulled over on Post Road after officers noticed that the taillights on his speeding car were not operational.

The officer noted that “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected from (Broege’s) breath.” Additionally, he only provided his driver’s license and failed to show the vehicle’s registration.

According to Police Officer Michael Coyne’s report, Broege said that he had a few beers with friends in White Plains and was returning to his Mount Vernon home.

During field sobriety tests, Broege “lacked smooth pursuit when tracking the stimulus” during the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, and also moved his head, despite being warned not to by police. He also began the Walk and Turn test five times without being prompted by responding officers.

Lastly, during the One-Leg Stand test, “Broege used his arms for balance, counted improperly and needed to place his foot on the ground repeatedly to keep from falling over.” Broege declined to take an Alco-senor test at the scene.

Once in police custody, a Datamaster test showed revealed that Broege had a blood alcohol content reading of .16 percent, twice the legal limit.

Broege was charged with a misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated, as well as several violations for speeding, the broken taillights and refusal to take a breath test. He was released on his own recognizance and is due back in Village Court on Wednesday, Jan. 21.
